Managed Object Storage monitoring
UpCloud Managed Object Storage keeps figures on how much each service stores and how much traffic it handles. You can see the current totals for a service and for each of its buckets, and a history of its storage and traffic that goes back to when the service was created. They're on the service's Usage and Buckets tabs in the Control Panel, and in the UpCloud API. For step-by-step instructions, see How to monitor Managed Object Storage usage.
What's measured
For storage, the current figures are the service's total size and its number of objects. Each bucket has the same two figures, and together they add up to the service's. The total size is also what Managed Object Storage billing is based on.
The history keeps these figures over time, together with the service's traffic. It's a series of points, one for each interval, such as an hour or a day, and each point has these figures:
| Control Panel | API field | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Total size | bytes_total | The service's total size at the end of the hour. For a longer interval, such as a day, it's the highest of the interval's hourly figures. |
| Total objects | objects_total | The service's number of objects, in the same way as the total size |
| Created size, Deleted size | bytes_created, bytes_deleted | The size of the objects created and deleted during the interval |
| Objects created, Objects deleted | objects_created, objects_deleted | The number of objects created and deleted during the interval |
| Inbound | bytes_received | The object data uploaded to the service during the interval |
| Outbound | bytes_transmitted | The object data downloaded from the service during the interval |
The API gives every figure in bytes, while the Control Panel shows sizes in binary units, where 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Where to see it
In the Control Panel:
- The Object Storage list shows each service's total size under USAGE and its number of objects under OBJECTS. STORAGE shows the storage the service currently has, which grows in steps of 250 GiB.
- A service's Usage tab shows its total size, number of objects and monthly price, with charts of the history under Statistics.
- A service's Buckets tab shows each bucket's size and number of objects.
With the API:
- Get service metrics,
GET /1.3/object-storage-2/<service-uuid>/metrics, returns the service's total size and number of objects. - List bucket metrics,
GET /1.3/object-storage-2/<service-uuid>/buckets, returns each bucket's size and number of objects. - List service metrics series,
GET /1.3/object-storage-2/<service-uuid>/metrics/series, returns the history.
If you use the UpCloud CLI, upctl object-storage bucket list <service> shows each bucket's size.
How often the figures update
The current figures are updated periodically, so an upload or a deletion shows after a short delay rather than straight away.
The history is collected hour by hour. Each hour's figures appear about an hour after the hour ends, and they don't change after that. Points for longer intervals are built from those hours, so the point for the current day is already there before the day ends and grows as each hour is added.
History
The history starts at the hour the service was created. You can read it in intervals of whole hours, from 1 to 24 hours, with all times in UTC. The intervals start at the time you ask the history to start from, so a range that starts at midnight UTC with 24-hour intervals gives one point for each day.
The Control Panel's Statistics use the same history. When you pick a month, they show one point for each day, and when you also pick a day, one for each hour. Only the months and days that have figures can be picked.
What counts toward size
All objects in a service's buckets count toward its total size. In a versioned bucket, that includes every older version of an object, and each delete marker counts as an object with a size of 0. For how to keep older versions from building up, see Managed Object Storage billing.
Only finished objects count, so the parts of a multipart upload don't add to the size until the upload is completed.
What counts as traffic
Inbound and outbound traffic count only object data, so the figures reflect the data your applications upload and download:
- A download counts the data it returns. A download of part of an object, with a
Rangeheader, counts only that part, and a download through a presigned URL counts in the same way. - Requests that don't return object data, such as listing a bucket or a
HEADrequest for an object, don't count. - An upload counts the data the service accepts. If the same data is sent again, such as a part of a multipart upload that's uploaded a second time, it counts each time, which is why inbound traffic can be larger than the size created. An upload that's refused, for example because of a checksum error, doesn't count.
Managed Object Storage includes zero-cost egress, and the Fair Transfer Policy applies.
