Meeting European hosting expectations
As a European provider to schools and public sector organizations, Vitec MV handles sensitive information necessitating compliance with GDPR and European data regulation. Before moving to UpCloud, the company’s infrastructure was running on AWS and Microsoft platforms. While technically effective, these solutions raised increasing customer concerns around non European hosting and data sovereignty.
“The main problem with our previous cloud solution was that it was not fully aligned with customer expectations around European hosting and jurisdiction meaning we couldn’t confidently offer a fully EU hosted setup.”
Esben Gaarsmand, CTO at Vitec MV, Vitec Software Group
On assessing cloud options, UpCloud stood out due to its European footprint, Nordic base, strong performance, competitive pricing, and exceptional support. This combination enabled Vitec MV to complete the migration in a short timeframe while maintaining stability. Just as importantly, the company gained a cloud foundation aligned with customer expectations around European jurisdiction and compliance.
A managed and portable cloud foundation
Today, Vitec MV runs its production infrastructure on UpCloud using its Cloud Servers, Managed Kubernetes, Managed Databases including PostgreSQL and Valkey, and Terraform for infrastructure deployment. A Managed Load Balancer supports the Kubernetes cluster, and scaling is only occasionally required.
The setup includes three separate environments, with production as the user facing platform. Regular backups, daily monitoring, and alerting ensure reliability and operational simplicity through managed services.
Greater flexibility and trust
Since moving to UpCloud, Vitec MV has gained more control and confidence in its infrastructure.
“A key difference compared to the previous setup is that our technology stack is now more general and portable, rather than tightly coupled to AWS or Microsoft. This gives us greater flexibility and makes it easier to introduce changes and adopt new technologies without being locked into a specific vendor ecosystem.”
Esben Gaarsmand, CTO at Vitec MV, Vitec Software Group
Furthermore the switch has streamlined onboarding and troubleshooting with reliance changing to more common tooling rather than proprietary cloud components.
From a business perspective, the move has strengthened trust by allowing Vitec MV to meet European hosting and jurisdiction requirements natively, supporting growth in regulated sectors. On finalising the migration process, Vitec saw an improved response time of 10-15 ms across majority of services.
A responsive partnership
Vitec MV describes UpCloud as a fantastic partner throughout its migration journey. Fast, professional support and direct communication through Slack helped the team make swift changes and reduce risk during the transition.
“UpCloud has been a fantastic partner throughout our American decoupling journey. From the very beginning, they provided stellar support and fast, responsive service.” comments Esben.
Via the UpCloud partner network, Vitec MV leveraged the expertise and guidance of Polar Squad, who helped with the implementation, automation, and migration work.
Looking ahead, Vitec MV plans to use UpCloud for all infrastructure needs wherever possible, building on a stable and compliant foundation to continue supporting accessible literacy solutions across the Nordics.
“We’re very happy with our setup and look forward to a long and successful collaboration.” says Esben.
