UpCloud Partners with Maria 01 to Support the Next Wave of Finnish and European Startups

Posted on 25 March 2026

Finland’s startup ecosystem has set a clear ambition: to create 100 startups generating €100 million in annual revenue by 2050. The “100×100” vision reflects a broader push to strengthen economic growth and global competitiveness through technology-driven companies.

Reaching that goal will require more than funding and talent. As digital sovereignty strategies take shape across Europe, startups are facing new expectations around data control and infrastructure from day one. This shift is not just about security. It is becoming a competitive factor, opening new opportunities for startups that align early.

UpCloud is partnering with Maria 01, the largest startup campus in the Nordics and home to a growing community of startups, investors, and ecosystem partners, to support Finnish and European startups building in this environment.

A structural shift in how startups build

Infrastructure decisions are changing in nature.

Companies are increasingly expected to show where their data resides, which jurisdiction applies, and how control is maintained. These questions are becoming standard in procurement, especially in regulated sectors.

Gartner expects that by 2030, more than 75 percent of organizations outside the US will have adopted digital sovereignty strategies. The implications are direct. Infrastructure choices now shape which markets startups can access.

Teams that account for this early avoid costly adjustments later.

What the partnership delivers

The partnership between UpCloud and Maria 01 is designed to remove a common early-stage constraint: access to infrastructure that meets both technical and regulatory expectations.

Startups within the Maria 01 ecosystem can build on our platform through the UpCloud Startup Program, which provides cloud credits, technical support, and guidance to help teams get up and running quickly without upfront infrastructure costs. We designed the program to support early-stage companies as they move from initial builds to production environments. Our easy-to-use platform and predictable pricing further support startups on their growth journey.

The companies will also run joint events and workshops at the Maria 01 campus, helping founders make informed infrastructure decisions as they scale.

The focus is practical. Lower the barrier to entry and help startups choose a foundation that will hold under growth.

Why European infrastructure is gaining ground

The partnership reflects a broader market shift.

Demand for sovereign cloud infrastructure is rising, driven by regulation, geopolitics, and the need to strengthen regional economies. Global sovereign cloud spending is expected to reach $80 billion in 2026, with strong continued growth.

For startups, this is not a secondary concern. It affects customer trust, compliance, and access to key markets.

A foundation that matches ambition

Infrastructure rarely leads a pitch, but it defines what a company can become. As expectations around compliance and control increase, early decisions become harder to change.

This partnership is built on a simple premise: give startups the right foundation early, and they can focus on building companies that scale with fewer constraints.

For the next generation of Finnish and European startups, that foundation is becoming part of the competitive edge.
