Simple Backup FAQ
Simple Backup can be enabled with a single click from your UpCloud Control Panel. Navigate to your server settings, open the Backups tab, select your preferred plan (Day, Week, Month, or Year), choose a daily backup time, and click Save. The first backup runs at the next scheduled time. You can also enable it via the UpCloud API.
Simple Backup is charged as a percentage of your Cloud Server plan price. The Day plan (1 daily backup) is included free on General Purpose, High CPU, and High Memory plans. The Week plan adds 20%, the Month plan 40%, and the Year plan 60% to your monthly server cost. For example, a Week plan on a 12 $/mo server costs 14.40 $/mo total. Additional storage devices not included in the server plan are billed at a separate per-gigabyte price. See the full breakdown on the UpCloud pricing page.
Simple Backup saves a full snapshot of your entire Cloud Server, including the system storage and all attached storage devices, in one go. Backups are taken using UpCloud’s optimised snapshot technology, which causes zero interruption or slowdown to your running server, even during peak load. Each backup represents the complete state of your server at the moment it was taken.
All backups are stored in the same data centre as your origin Cloud Server to enable fast restoration. If you need off-site backups for disaster recovery, you can manually clone any backup to a different UpCloud data centre. This process runs independently of your server and requires no downtime. There are four plans to choose from. The Day plan keeps 1 daily backup. The Week plan keeps 7 daily backups. The Month plan retains 4 weekly and 7 daily backups. The Year plan stores 12 monthly, 4 weekly, and 7 daily backups. As new backups are taken, older ones beyond the plan limit are automatically deleted.
You have two restoration options. The first is a full restore: shut down your server, then restore a backup directly onto the origin storage to revert the entire storage to the saved state. The second is cloning: without shutting down, clone the backup to a new storage device and attach it to any server to access individual files. Recent backups restore quickly from active storage; older backups may take longer as they are archived on dedicated backup servers. See the full guide at UpCloud docs.
Simple Backup is a packaged, one-click solution with simple pricing. You pick a plan and UpCloud handles the rest with automated daily snapshots. Flexible Backup lets you define your own schedule, choose any retention period from 1 to 6 days, 1 to 4 weeks, or 1 to 12 months, and apply different rules to individual storage devices. If you have multiple disks with different change frequencies, Flexible Backup gives you per-device control.
All Cloud Servers on all plans support Simple Backup, but pricing may differ based on the used plan.
