This guide walks you through setting up shared network storage using UpCloud File Storage and NFS (Network File System) on Ubuntu servers. File Storage provides scalable, managed storage that can be accessed by multiple servers simultaneously over SDN Private Networks.
UpCloud File Storage is a managed Network File System (NFS) service that lets multiple Cloud Servers and Kubernetes pods share the same file system over an SDN Private Network. It provides a standard POSIX interface, so it mounts directly on Linux, Unix, and other NFS-compatible systems. File Storage is purpose-built for shared data access, collaborative workloads, and centralised file management across your infrastructure.
File Storage is built for shared, file-level access across many clients at once. Block Storage attaches to a single Cloud Server at a time and is best for operating systems and databases, while Managed Object Storage is S3-compatible and ideal for unstructured data such as media files, backups, and static assets. File Storage fills the gap when several servers need to read and write the same files simultaneously.
File Storage uses the Network File System (NFS) protocol, with NFSv4.1 recommended for optimal performance. UpCloud publishes recommended mount options for parallel connections and larger read and write block sizes to maximise throughput. Standard NFS clients on Linux and Unix work without additional software, so any Cloud Server on the same private network can connect.
Yes. File Storage supports ReadWriteMany access, which means multiple Cloud Servers and Managed Kubernetes pods can mount the same file system concurrently. This makes File Storage well suited for synchronised web clusters, distributed application nodes writing to a shared directory, centralised logging, and any workload that needs a single source of truth across many compute instances.
File Storage instances start at 250 GB and scale up to 25 TB per instance. You can deploy a new storage instance through the UpCloud Control Panel in just a few minutes, or programmatically through the UpCloud API. Capacity can be adjusted to match your workload, and you can deploy multiple File Storage instances on the same account if you need more total capacity or separate environments for your Cloud Servers and Managed Databases.
File Storage is priced at €0.15 per GB per month, billed hourly with a maximum of 28 days per month, the same predictable model used across UpCloud services. Network transfer between File Storage and Cloud Servers over an SDN Private Network is free of charge. There are no separate request fees and no egress charges for private network traffic.
File Storage is available from:
We will be expanding to New York in the coming months. The same regions host the rest of the UpCloud platform, including Cloud Servers, Managed Kubernetes, and Managed Load Balancer, so you can keep your full stack in one zone for the lowest latency.
File Storage is reached exclusively over an SDN Private Network in the same zone, which keeps traffic isolated from the public internet. Attach your File Storage instance and your Cloud Servers to the same private network, create a share with the appropriate access rule, then mount the share on each client using a standard NFS client. The whole setup takes a few minutes from the Control Panel.
Yes. File Storage is available through the UpCloud REST API, which covers the full lifecycle of services, networks, shares, access rules, and labels. The same API powers the Control Panel and integrates with the rest of the UpCloud platform, including Cloud Servers, Block Storage, and Managed Kubernetes.
