Container Registry FAQ
The UpCloud Container Registry is a secure storage system designed for container images and other OCI-compliant artifacts. It allows developers to store, manage, and distribute artifacts for modern cloud-native application deployment. This service acts as a an application catalog that is essential for running containers, Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines.
Our registry allows you to stay entirely within the UpCloud product ecosystem. By keeping your images near your compute resources, you benefit from ultra-low latency to pull images when using Managed Kubernetes (UKS) (because the images are hosted on the same high-speed network) and therefore reduce the time to deploy and scale your applications. UpCloud Container Registry also helps you scan your artifacts for known vulnerabilities and other security issues. By using mirroring, you also avoid the risks of public repositories becoming temporarily unavailable. All the while you also reduce your dependency on alternative solutions by hyperscalers which charge hefty egress fees for pulling your images from outside their network, like AWS.
We offer a simple and predictable flat-rate pricing model based on storage. Unlike Docker Hub, we do not use “per-user” pricing or seat limits. This approach provides total price transparency and eliminates the complex costs associated with scanned images or webhooks found at other providers (e.g. Azure).
There are zero data transfer costs for pulling images within the UpCloud ecosystem. We have removed the “egress pain” that customers often experience with hyperscalers who charge to move your own data. You can pull your images as often as you need without worrying about unpredictable monthly bills.
The service acts as an automated gatekeeper by providing built-in vulnerability scanning. Every image is scanned for known vulnerabilities to ensure that the code you deploy to production is secure and compliant. This feature is integrated into the product rather than being an expensive add-on cost.
The registry is 100% OCI-compliant and portable. It works seamlessly with the Docker CLI, Helm, and any standard container runtime. Whether you are using UpCloud’s Managed Kubernetes, Nomad, or self-hosted Docker, the registry fits into your existing pipeline without vendor lock-in.
